Tickers

I think the new ticker-frame is fantastic! I can open anything I’m watching with a quick click, always have the view to hand without the need to raise/lower other windows. It’s brilliant. My only concern is that you can’t change the text size in the ticker without changing the whole page, but it’s minor!

How do you use your tickers? Here’s what I do…

For blogs, I don’t do shares play so any blogs in the ticker are simply to give me a scrolling link to the blog in question(saves having to use my (limited to 10) custom links).
For Ideas, I keep the ones I’m building and the ones I’m crashing in the ticker, if a builder is red I can instantly go check it out, if a crasher is green, likewise. Also in there are industries I’m watching for others.

The ticker tool is the most under-rated tool in the game IMO. I’ll tell you though, I won’t be stopping using it any time soon!

Jazz Ideas

I’ve almost finished with phase 1 of the Jazz Industry death. So far I’ve been pretty much focusing on getting the price down, which I feel has been very successful. It’s now hovering around 100K from a starting place of 100Million so result there.

I’m now going to be moving on to phase 2 – penalising it. This involves creating enough ideas in the industry to prevent the price rising (Industries with lots of ideas existing in them are penalized on the drops to make it difficult to raise the price and to better reflect their market share, you’ll have seen red “penalized” industries in your portfolios)

This will take a lot longer than it took to kill the price but will yield a better long-term result. It will also mean I don’t need to watch the industry so much and if I notice it turning green in my ticker I’ll just hit it again!

More Cheese, anyone?

Some people have been whining about Jazz to Love/Pain members. I’d just like to reiterate that this is not a Love Pain hit but a billythekid hit. It’s funny in this game how people never seem to go to the source of the problem(me being the source, the hit on Jazz being the problem) favouring going behind their back to people who they think hold some control over your game play!

I am doing Jazz on my own. I am the sole re-indexer and I have links in place of my own to ensure that this industry WILL NOT BE PROFITABLE.

Now that that’s clear…

Those whining in PM weren’t the intended targets of the hit and furthermore were given notice of the hit, after already selling a substantial holding in Jazz! As far as I’m concerned by continuing to hold these ideas and even buying more, they are doing it with their eyes fully open and deserve no leniency. If you don’t want to take this hit SELL YOUR IDEAS!!!!!!!

I can’t make it any clearer than that can I?

Current price is B$855,188.03 from a starting price of B$97,713,782.00 meaning that the sniped ideas have lost the sniper, so far, B$71,675,359,537,800

Yep, 71 TRILLION Blogdollars!

Ouch!

Jazz

I’m killing Jazz right now, I suggest you sell up if you own them, coz you won’t get a better price than NOW!

People need to learn that if they snipe industries I’ve dropped on purpose in order to fix the industry(make it profitable again) that it will NOT be a good investment for them.

Fun Fun Fun

Well it was all fun the other night in #thebar IRC channel for the first (of many) Bar Quiz!

Congratulations to Ixx who won the night with 6 correct answers from 23 possible in the fastest finger first showdown.

I’m disappointed I couldn’t attend myself as I was really looking forward to it. Ho-hum. I’ve made an update to my industry search page to now include twitters which has been a long time coming really!

I’m also waiting on Subwolf getting back to me on the Player Market script. I’m thinking it should be any day now.

I’ve also thrown a new option or two into stud. If you are building an industry and need to find the first(from the bottom) blog with no incoming type !1k #industry e.g. !1k 1234.

Next: If you are building industries and want to follow what blogs to index, try this one. !index playerid industryid e.g. !index 55024 101
What it does is searches the PQ logs for that last two days, matching up what you’ve thrown in the PQ to what belongs in that industry and uploads a handy list, giving you the url. So now you have an easy-to-click list of links rather than searching through that industry every day! Check out an example.

Speaking of mIRC scripts I’ve had my scripts blog added back into the game and I’ve started actually updating it again. If anyone wants anything written for their mIRC please just PM me in the game or IRC and I’ll see if I can do it! It’s my main hobby so a new project is always welcome!

The Link maker

I’ve changed the box part in the link maker a little so that now a whole industry can be placed on your sidebar with just one link!

Ok, that’s not really what’s happening but if you check this blog you’ll see the link for the jazz industry(very bottom on the left) follow it and pick a blog, you’ll see that blog linking into it!

Pretty neat huh.

Ok if you have a scroll mouse go back to this blog and position your mouse over the industry. scroll down with your scroll-wheel and that’s how it works.

Of course this blog’s stupid theme breaks it!

Industry View Preferences

If you are having trouble with your industry view preferences and you use Firefox browser, here’s how to sort it, as originally posted here.

1. close firefox

make sure it’s closed coz if it’s not it’ll try to over-write your changes when you do close it. (unless you use a decent text editor that warns you of such things)

2. go to start/run and type in %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
you should get a window open up with a folder named something like kljerfae.default

3. open that folder

4. look for the cookies.txt file and open it in your favourite text editor

5. You’ll need to get this step from the forum post as I can’t get a tab character to stick in blogger, even using <pre> tags. Without them it works not, I tested!

6. SAVE THE FILE but don’t close your editor just yet

7. open firefox and navigate to your preferences page in BS
check it says heavy
close firefox again
open firefox and navigate to your preferences page in BS
check it still says heavy

if it does then you can probably close your text editor and enjoy the game again.

Happy Hour

As members of The Bar Corporation know we like to have a Friday “Happy Hour” where we share the love in the form of ideas priced at B$1 each.

In the past we’ve had some problems with people unsuspectingly buying up all the ideas on offer at once without realising. So I’ve made an addition to stud in IRC for people to make it as easy as I can for now.

To use it first get the industry number you want to bond, then go into an IRC channel where stud is (#stud #thebar #billythekids-hideout) and type

!happy [number]

eg. !happy 1234

Stud will reply to you in your Private Message window with a link to click and something to paste to the corp.

The line given to the corp is a one-click-straight-to-buy link where they purchase 1 idea at B$1, no confirmation windows to mess it up!

Have a great Friday!

Wher have I been

I can’t believe it’s been almost 2 months since I updated this! It’s not like there’s been nothing going on in the game!

Well, I’ve been watching the Froggie BSEC case with interest and vocalising it in the forum. I just want to say here that I wasn’t sticking up for him per sé but I was just wanting to see the evidence in full, which Ken went above and beyond IMO to provide, !props ken!!

Also in the news is my artefact collecting. I’m down to 38(at time of writing). I keep my needed arte list updated for all to see at http://the-kid.org/blogshares/needartes.html and I’m really happy with how it’s going. Check out my built artefact transactions from april-ish to see the progress. I’m getting there like Carlos did (well almost)

Carlos has had us all busy in the bar corp writing stuff for the bar blog and keeping the fun times coming with friday night happy hours(more like a Friday night lock-in) and various member competitions. The corp is a real breath of fresh air to the game especially since operation preparation H and all that that entailed. I don’t know why UTs aren’t allowed in the bar though. It’s a cross-corp corporation and as such I feel that they shouldn’t be exempted. It’s supposed to be a fun place to hang out for everyone surely. All my scripts are available for UT usage as much as anyone else in the game as they aren’t corporation focused, they are game focused.

Anyhow, that’s me done with UT fairness, the rest of the time they are prime for a kicking! lol

happy gamin’

Idea-Mania and Love/Pain

I’ve gone overnight from needing over 500 ideas to being joint first in the game. One better than that is Eaglehawk who needed around 2000 ideas the other day!

wtg everyone who filled our PM bids especially boo, MissMelville and R U Serious. Without that help we’d still be also rans! This just goes to show what a great corp run by dedicated people can do for each other. We always fill each other’s bids where possible but, especially in the case of RUS doing hundreds at once is a tedious chore and one I am only too pleased they took on.

Love Pain are a really nice corp run by really nice people. It’s a very positive corp in it’s values and doesn’t bother too much with all the corp war nonsense. Also Beachtiglet is a great leader in that she lets you have pretty much free reign over how you want to play the game. This means I can do my ideas, shares and bonds while still having the odd dig at the UT corp in my spare time.

More than that though I just want to say thanks to a bunch of good friends.

Cheers.

Scavenger Contest

This will be my entry to the scavenger hunt once it’s complete…

I thought I’d try to get as many original pictures as possible for this contest. I roped Kids-thekid into it too. I made up a Blogshares sign to try to get into the shots to prove their originality. All these pictures were taken on a Nokia 7500 camera phone(except the logged in to BS one – for obvious reasons) Clicking a picture should take you to the full sized image…

Headings in RED are ones I was unable to get myself (so far)

1. A man in a kilt either outdoors or at a workplace.

2. A plane in the process of landing.
This was horrible. We live about 3 minutes from Aberdeen Airport, which incidentally is the busiest heliport in the world. This didn’t make it easy to get the picture though.

Attempt 1

Attempt 2

Those do have a plane landing in them!! We went round the other side of the airport and stopped under the approach. Kidthekid-1 lay across the dash holding the sign to get us this shot…

3. SubWolf surrounded by women.

Thanks to MMelville for the idea on this one. I thought this was gonna be a total bitch to get but instead one of the easiest shots yet…

Can’t see it?

Thanks for a great idea MM!!

4. Dave’s mom in combat boots.
Another tough one!

5. Two people knitting towards each other on the same project.

6. Ducks in a waterscape scene. (bonus for most ducks).
There’s a pond quite near our house with ducks on it so Kidthekid-4 and I set out, bread in hand, to do this one on our own. This was a mistake. Firstly it’s a logistic disaster. I need to take the pic while she holds the sign and at the same time not drown in the pond! Another body would have been good but we went ahead anyhow. The sun wasn’t sitting right for a good shot, coupled with the death of child possibility so I thought I’d take a pre-risk test shot…

I was surprised that turned out OK so thought right, time for the kid. This actually created a problem in that when she saw the ducks that was it, Dad was ignored! I spent literally seconds trying to get her to turn round and smile, holding the sign but it wasn’t to be, you can still see it’s the same sign though…

I suppose I should mention that I counted 18 ducks on the pond, not sure how many I got in the shot though. I don’t suppose it’ll matter as someone’s bound to find a pic with thousands of the wee buggers.

7. Someone surrounded by coffee cups.

This was bound to be easy. Coffee cups have their own shelf in one of our kitchen units so step in Kidthekid-4 again. This was actually the first shot I took for the comp…

8. A pink elephant.

Because of the previous palava with the elephant being yellow this was left longer than I’d hoped. However, a brilliant member of my fanclub soon mentioned she had a serviette with pink elephants on it and stuck it on her flickr page…

No No No, said I. That’s no good, it requires “Blogsharification” (you can use that word if you like). Happily my mates are as mad as I am and the end result is, I’m sure you’ll agree, fantastic!

9. A woman holding a Newcastle (it’s a brand of beer).

10. Larger than life animal sculpture (extra points for ridiculous size / subject).
This is made of coat hangers…

11. Someone asleep at their terminal.

12. An ass with a hat on it.

13. A hot air balloon in flight.

14. A cell phone logged into B$.

Easy thought I. Not so! This was a hellish picture to take. Firstly I had to use my digital camera. Secondly it was a close up. Thirdly the phone kept going to black as I was about to take it. Still after some perseverance I got the shot, note it’s actually “logged in” and not just on the site…

15. A wild animal (cannot be at a conventional zoo).

I remembered that our landlords, the Rowett Institute, keep a bunch of strange animals on their land as part of their work. So I took the Kidthekid-3 down and got a couple of him with the Llamas. Ok they aren’t in the wild, but they are still wild animals!

Bonus: A flag of your favourite country.

email

stud has a new email messaging system installed. This took me two days to make as the integration of mIRC sockets and my webhost’s email capabilities makes it less than a marriage made in heaven. However perseverance was the key and I finally got it working thanks to ripping some code from the wonderful people at http://formtoemail.com who provided me with the php code I could just ftp and call from mIRC via sockets. Letting the PHP(mail) plugin do the hard work. My hosting provider (godaddy.com) seem to have some sort of block on connecting directly to their smtp relays. I did raise a support ticket but they only provided me with another smtp relay, unfortunately I could only access that from within the site(i.e from on their machines) if I could do that, I wouldn’t need a host!!

Anyhow, the PHP script sends the email directly from within the site. Email addresses are completely hidden from prying eyes. This also has the additional effect of bypassing my daily limit on relays as, well, I’m not relaying, I’m doing it direct.

It works as follows.

You type !email nick message for example,
<billythekid> !email billy where the hell are you?
<stud> billythekid: Mail sent to billy!

It then sends the email to “billy”’s stored email addy within the bot so no channel scrapers can grab the mail addy either. The email I received looked like…

Of course this means that not everyone can receive mail via IRC. Only those who have been manually added to stud’s list. So no one need worry about suddenly receiving loads of crap emails from folk. Also only those manually added to a list of senders have the permissions to use it anyhow. At the moment that’s only me but it will be open to anyone.

Now, this probably needs a policy statement too. So…

I do not take any responsibility for the content of emails sent via this system other than ones sent by myself. Any user found to be abusing the system will have their privileges and or email addresses removed at the discretion of myself.

I will NOT sell/forward or otherwise use the email addresses submitted for inclusion for any reason. I will simply copy the address and paste it into stud’s list. Email addresses will never be public and are never shown to the person doing the emailing. All emails will come from stud@the-kid.org and stud@the-kid.org will not be used for any other(non-IRC) emails. People may use more than one nickname for the same email address (!email billy, !email billythekid, !email btk will all reach me at my email address). I will not add any email address without request. I will not seek authorisation to add any email address. It’s entirely voluntary.

This system will be open to everyone in the game on request regardless of corporation etc, as are all stud scripts.

[/policy statement]

Now I hope to expand this in future to perhaps send people information from other parts of stud (links lists for example) but at the moment it’s just a quick IRC-to-email script for messaging people who may not be online or for whatever reason you like. One thing to note is that anyone in the channel you are using it on will see the message too and I have no plans to make this a hidden/closed system at the moment. I won’t for example make it possible to private message stud with the !email command to hide your messages from others. Stud does have his own channel at #stud if you want some limited privacy(i.e if nobody else is there!) I’m all about transparency!

More linking fun

I thought I’d try a little experiment yesterday.

I set up a script to pull the top industries based on price from B$10million per idea upwards(from this page) and throw them into a text file.

I then set up another one using studs linker script to pull each one of these(202) industries into a single text file, took over 3 hours to run but I ended up with over 10,500 links.

I then dropped these links into a blog. Reindexing it however resulted in a maxing out on the spiders at 1189 links. Hmmmm thought I. That’s no good. I was hoping for strange results on it but not this!

No matter. I then checked out http://blogshares.com/major_old.php?type=outgoing and that clearly shows that the most you can get is indeed around the 1200 mark. So there’s the results of my not-so-scientific experiment. If you want to link to over 1200 blogs tough. It makes the spiders sick!

Oh and I removed the links so next reindex all those incomings will be gone, go get your ideas NOW!!!

and as the plane crashed down he thought, "well isn’t this nice"…

…and isn’t it Ironic?

Words, Alanis Morisette.

Irony is a great thing isn’t it? I personally am loving the irony being displayed by Jin Jirrie in the game. She spent hours telling us in the forum that twitters suck, she only cares about the index, blogfarming is bad for the game then in a U-turn akin to the tories circa early 90s she’s adding 2 twitters (and a blog) (1 2 3) into the game and linking amongst them. It’s great to watch.

I can see she’s trying to make some sort of stand using sarcasm perhaps but the comedy value of it is fantastic.

I hope she keeps this up. It’s good to see that the message has finally gotten through to her. Like it or not, this is how the game IS so make the most of it, as she’s clearly doing.

This post may sound like I am taking the piss a little but to be honest I think it’s exactly what I’ve been going on about for ages. Embrace change whether you like it or not and use it to work FOR you. Keep it up Jin. Nice to see you using the UT shared brain on your days!

Share Play

Well, that was a bit of craziness eh! Can’t get too rich I suppose. It was good to see shares play compete with ideas in the cash stakes for a while. I wonder if the current levelling off will be good to, should do.

It was so lucky I was doing those industry hits when the new maths came into play. My blog was briefly the most profitable in the game, with a knock-on effect to all the blogs to which I link. I’ve ceased those attacks for now to allow some of my friends to get some peace from whiners! I’m now doing a blanket linking to the top 500 blogs in the game daily from my 3 main blogs. (1 2 3)

So that’s that!

More on the linker

Some people have had trouble with IRC DCC sends(how stud sends links to you in IRC) this is not uncommon throughout the IRC world. Rather than spend time setting up everyone’s IRC clients and or routers/hubs to get them going. I just made stud an extra option.

There are 3 main types of command to get stud to list now. The basic algorithm being(items in <> optional, N= industry number):

!links N|top<500> <drop> <web>

  • !links 1234 – makes a (.txt file) list of industry 1234(surfing) and sends it to you in IRC.

-or-

  • !links top – makes a (.txt file) list of the top 100 blogs and sends it to you in IRC.

-or-

  • !links top500 – makes a (.txt file) list of the top 500 blogs and sends it to you in IRC.
  • !links 1234 drop – makes a (.txt file) drop-down list of industry 1234(surfing) and sends it to you in IRC.
  • !links 1234 web – makes a (.txt file) list of industry 1234 and uploads it to the web.

-or-

  • !links 1234 drop web – makes a .txt drop-down list of 1234 and uploads it to the web.

For uploaded web lists stud will give you link to the file in channel.

Now hopefully everyone will have access to his lists.

Studs linker

Thought I’d better quickly document a slight addition in stud’s link harvester feature. Now if you type top instead of an industry number he’ll send you a link-list for the top 100 blogs in the game (from http://blogshares.com/top100.php)

!links top

I’ve also included another option to create a dropdown list rather than a sidebar list. To get a dropdown add the word drop to your list request

!links 1234 drop
!links top drop

the second gives you (today):

Pretty neat huh? That takes up so much less space in your sidebar. See the same exact code on my personal blog. I just dropped it straight into a text widget(very bottom of the sidebar)…

btk

[edit] I’ve changed the drop-down so that the spiders will see the hyperlinks, not much point in making links if the game can’t see them! Unfortunately the names show 2 entries now as well as breaking XHTML compliance(which means it’s not going on my own blog anymore either!). PQ is borked atm so will need to wait and see if this works. Clicks should still work in the drop-down though.[/edit]

[edit2] That “fix” does work, I’ll need to find out how to make it hidden altogether now, coz that’s just ugly! Strangely when it was in my personal blog’s sidebar it fitted in nicely without going huge, so perhaps on your own blogs it’ll be fine[/edit2]

mIRC the third

This is a follow on post from:

and will use the same formatting

So we’ve connected to IRC using mIRC. We’ve registered our nicks so that people know it’s really us when they are talking. We’ve toyed with the bots. What’s next? What makes mIRC so much better than the java in BS?

Step in this tutorial. Automation…

This is very simple so don’t be put off by technical sounding jargon, I’ll try to keep it in English!

What is a script(and an alias)?

Simply put, a script is a piece of code that reacts to things in mIRC. This could be as simple as you hitting an F-key or someone saying something in a channel. Aliases are like commands you send to your mIRC. We are going to make your first alias now.

In mIRC hold Alt and hit R to open the Remote tab of the Scripts Editor. Click on the Aliases tab. You should see a big white box with some things already in there. In this window at the top go to file/new. This should present you with a nice fresh page.

We are going to set up some F-keys to automate some things. Firstly let’s identify to NickServ by pressing F9. To do this type the following in the Aliases window…

f9 ns identify {password}

Save that by clicking file/save or Ctrl-S or click the OK button.

Now when you see the message:

-NickServ- This nickname is registered and protected. If it is your
-NickServ- nick, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password. Otherwise,
-NickServ- please choose a different nick.

You’ll be able to just hit F9 and your password will be sent automatically. Now, was that easy or what? The thing to remember with aliases is that each alias should be placed on a new line in the Aliases tab you were just in. How about some other easy ones..

f10 say The time is now $time in {where you are}
f11 away $?(Reason? – leave blank to come back)
ghost ns ghost $1 {yourpassword}
f12 ghost {yournick}

The $time is what’s known as an identifier in mIRC, which just means it’s something that holds updated information when you want it. The $?(Reason? – leave blank to come back) pops up a text entry box for you to fill in yourself. $1 just means the first word(double $s just mean it’s required, if not filled in it wont run the alias). Click save/OK and press F10 or F11. If you get disconnected from the network but return to find your main nick is still there hit F12 to “ghost” it. (Make the network kill it so you can have your nick back)

If you want more than those examples feel free to contact me in IRC and I’ll help you out.

In closing for this one I’d like to take you to the perform box. In mIRC hold Alt and hit O to open up mIRC’s main options box. There are LOADS of options in there but we are interested in just one. The perform on connect window. Get there by clicking the + beside Connect then click Options. Then you’ll see the Perform… button as shown below:

Click Perform… and you’ll get a new box:

In this window make sure the Enable perform on connect box is checked. Then in the Perform commands: box type F9 and hit Enter then on the next line type join #blogshares. Click OK to close and save then click OK again to close the mIRC options box.

Now when you connect to mIRC you’ll automatically identify your nick and join #blogshares. You can also put F12 in there if you want to, it only works if you’re not using the nick at the time so if you connect as another nick it’ll attempt to ghost your main nick for you.

Hint: Any aliases can be run by typing /aliasname so /f12 would do the same as just hitting F12. /ghost mynick would try to ghost mynick using the password filled in in the alias.

An example of this is your /me alias. It actually sends the “describe” command – try it yourself, type

/describe #channelname jumps around

the me alias would be

me describe $active $1-

me – aliasname
describe – command
$active – the currently active window
$1- – all text ($1 = word 1, $1-6 would be words 1 to 6 so $1- is word one to the end, whatever word that may be)

I hope this was easy to follow. If anyone needs any help with mIRC or IRC in general I’m only too happy to help.

(for the IRC savvy out there don’t bother me with privmsg action corrections, it’s a newbie tute not an RFC explanation!)

More stud stuff

OK we may not have the chipmarket thing all ironed out yet but…

New addition in stud’s armoury of !int

type !int in a channel stud’s in and he’ll tell you the last time corporation interest was paid as well as the current system time.

I’ve also tweaked his !dbf and !lbf commands to be in keeping with the current BS timezone. (which is GMT-8 for anyone interested)

The full run down of stud’s commands are now as follows (items in < > are optional)

!help or !stud shows this menu
!hug <nick> hugs <nick> (if no nick given hugs you!)
!strip <nick> does a strip for <nick> (if no nick is given strips for you!)
!comp #user relays the current composite place for the given user id
!profit #industry percentage% tells how much each bond should be in the industry given to obtain the given percentage profit as well as shows a hyperlink to that bond issue page
!pamper <nick> gives a random “food” to <nick> (or you!) while indulging <nick>(or you!) in some random pampering
!dbf Shows what date it was 6 months ago for blog delistings
!lbf Shows what date it was 3 months ago for blog additions
!uklotto Picks 6 random numbers from 1-49
!uslotto Picks 6 random numbers from 1-50
!boy Sets your nickname as a BOY (studbot admin can over-ride this command if you make a mistake)
!girl Sets your nickname as a GIRL (studbot admin can over-ride this command if you make a mistake)
!8ball question answers the given question.
!links industrynumber Sends you a .txt file with links to the top 100 blogs in the given industry.
!int Tells you when corporation interest was last paid.

There are more commands available to bot-admin which I won’t bother listing here. All in all I think he’s coming along pretty nicely.

Blatant Advertising!

I have a blog – not in the game – with some of my mIRC scripts in it. I made a links list of the top demo blogs today (English/Male/Female/Americas/Asia/Europe/Middle East/Oceania/Africa/Antartica) and realised that there were many doubles in the list. Well trather than trawl through them I remembered I once made a script to filter out double lines in a text file, originally for mp3 lists (no point in getting the same song twice) but perfect for this.

After running it on the file I made with all the links it removed over 230 doubles.

You can find the script at my scripts blog, look on the right for btkdoubler. My next mIRC tutorial will go into using scripts.

mIRC Installment 2

This is a follow on post from:

and will use the same formatting.

So you’re now connected to #Blogshares in IRC. What now? Well, lets think about registering your nick, this means nobody else on the network can use it. To register a nickname in WyldRyde…

  1. Check the nickname you want is available by typing:
    /ns info {nickyouwant}

  2. If you get a message saying something like nickyouwant is not registered then you are onto a winner! If you get information about a nick then it’s registered already, think of another and repeat instruction 1. Once you’ve found the (unregistered) nick you want go on to 3.
  3. Change to the nickname by typing:
    /nick {nickyouwant}

  4. In the status window (the one that doesn’t have anyone else in it) type:
    /ns register {password} {email@address.com}

Use a proper email address as this is how WyldRyde will send you your password should you forget it. They won’t send you anything else. This email address won’t be seen by anyone else either(unlike the one in lesson 1 – connecting to mIRC)

  5. That’s your new nick registered. There are more advanced options available for nick manipulating/registering but that is all the new IRCer needs to know for now.

OK that’s taken me more time to write than it’s taken you to do probably. So let’s move on to the BS Bots.

Bots are simply IRC clients(like your mIRC) which run automatically. They have scripts loaded in them to automate many things, from channel protection(IRC gets spammers too) to bartender scripts to usable BS integrated scripts for getting information from the BS site while in IRC.

The bots(I know of) are

  • Jade – the main BS IRC bot. Jade, a ‘girl’ bot, has scripts loaded that allow her a unique insight into the BS databases. She also keeps the channel stats
  • Mia – Mia is another ‘girl’ bot. Her commands are prefixed with the # sign. She belongs to Ts.
  • Katie – This bot watches over channels for AdamF. She’s quiet in channel(unlike Jade) but packs a punch if required.
  • Stud – Stud is the only ‘boy’ bot. Run by me he is mostly for fun but does provide some unique services. These have been covered in this blog before so I won’t go into them here. Stud doesn’t run in #Blogshares so you might not see him at all!(I just need to get the free advertising in eh!)

The most usable bot is probably Jade. Her !bs (blogshares) commands are:

!bs blogs
!bs blisted
!bs claimed
!bs cache
!bs chips
!bs ads
!bs avgchips
!bs avgkarma
!bs hikarma
!bs lokarma
!bs links
!bs votes

!bs priority

!bs bondstot
!bs bondsavl
!bs ideatran
!bs alturl
!bs mbadd
!bs mbmod
!bs mbdel
!bs alturl
!bs ads
!bs answers
!bs industries
!bs newblogs
!bs raffle
!bs blacklist
!bs mission
!bs missionchips
!bs feedgood
!bs feedbad
!bs queueavg
!bs sigma
!bs sigmaavg
!bs chances

and her other commands(as given with a !commands request) are:

!rules – the channel rules
!translatehelp – Using altavista’s babelfish in channel.
!value (your number) – Get your current Networth.
!user (your number) – Get your user profile.
!blog (blog url) – Get the Share price, the PE and valuation of a blog.
!blogind (blog url) – Get the industries of a blog.
!ideas (industry id) – Get the current value of an industry and it’s ideas.
!motd – Get the latest news.

You can now have a play about with Jade (there are some undocumented commands in her, watch in channel to see those – !coffee is a good start!)

I’d need to see Adam and Ts for a list of their bots commands but stud’s are available by typing !stud in a channel that he is on.

Handy Hints:

  • type /whois {nickname} to see more info on a person, including what channels they are on.
  • type /ns help for more information from Nickserv – The wyldryde bot concerned with nick registrations.
  • you can create your own channel just by joining it! type /join #yournick to join your own channel!

Next time: How to automatically identify to Nickserv and other helpful things you can do with mIRC.

mIRC for dummies

It’s been a long time coming I suppose but here is my how to connect to the IRC side of Blogshares for dummies tutorial.

Some pointers:

  1. Anything in {curly brackets} should be replaced with your own information
  2. I am always happy to help with IRC troubles so if you can’t follow this, yell at me in the game!

You might be wondering why you want to use mIRC over, say, the Java applet in the game. Well, because you can do so much more with mIRC, it’s fully customizable and scriptable. You can change the look, the feel, the way it works. But for the beginner, it’s just so much easier to navigate IRC in mIRC.

The setup!

  1. Download mIRC from here.
  2. Once downloaded run the file to install the program.
  3. Open mIRC (If a box pops up with confusing info just close it – this is the easy method!)
  4. Copy the following line changing anything in red to match your info. (…and take out the {} brackets)

/server -f irc.wyldryde.org -i {your nickname} {an alternative nickname in case the first is taken} {email address – can be a fake email} {Your BS ID number} -j #blogshares

So for example I would type:

/server -f irc.wyldryde.org -i billythekid billy billy@anything.com 55024 -j #blogshares

Now you are connected to the IRC chat channel! You don’t need to type that every tiem you connect, hopefully you can just type /server or click connect as all the info should be filled in now!

You can have a play around with mIRC, checking out the colours etc. Might I suggest turning the background colour from white to grey…

Next time : Registering your nickname and using the bots

More on script use

In my last post about stud’s scripts I mentioned that they are open to anyone in the game to use. I guess this is with the caveat that you can actually connect to IRC somehow, either thru mIRC(or another, less good, client) or through the Java IRC applet in BS itself.

If anyone cannot connect to IRC and wants to use a script please message me in the game and I’ll run it for you and send you the results.

Stud Scripts

I should just point out that Studbot scripts are available to anyone in the game. This is to make sure that they in no way give one player advantages not available to another player. All my B$ scripts operate in this way. I am all about fairness!

If you want to use a stud script join #cowboys or #billythekids-hideout in IRC(wyldryde) and do whatever you wanted to do!

for the link lister you don’t even need to join another channel(so you can do it discreetly by typing /msg #billythekids-hideout !links 1234(for example) ) #billythekids-hideout accepts messages from outwith the channel.

Asshattery – a rewording…

If you think ideas in an industry are artificially high, then you can use the method explained in my last post to bring the price down to a more reasonable level, might I suggest B$500.

btk

Add comment Fri 25 January 2008

Asshattery?

Well, some of my friends in the game have been receiving private messages from a player complaining about me trashing “her!” industries. I just want to say that the support for what I’ve been doing has been overwhelming. This player is consistently condescending to other players using terms such as “haven’t you been taught that” and “he(me) doesn’t understand the game maths.”

Well, whaddya know, turns out I do in fact know how to trash an industry and for anyone wanting to join in, here’s how I do it.

First make sure you have some blogs in the game, I have access to 4 that I use normally with others if necessary. You really need at least 4 blogs for this to be effective.

Second use stud’s link harvester feature to get a nice list of blogs in the industry, put this list in each of your blogs.

Third re-index your blogs to get the new list recognised.

Fourth re-index the blogs in the industry, making sure each blog has your target industry in it’s top 5 industries(the green ones) If it’s not, visit the blog and make sure it’s a proper vote and vote only your target industry, you might need friends to help or just have some that won’t go up. All blogs in the industry now have at least 4 incoming links, which you need when crashing an industry. If you want to build an industry you re-index blogs with preferably less than 3. This is why you need not worry if you can’t get the target industry in all the blogs top 5s. They can’t be used to up the price anymore anyhow should they find themselves being used.

You’ve now made almost the entire industry unprofitable. If there are 100 or less blogs in it then it’s unprofitable, the price will keep dropping. If there are over 100 you may want to manually link the next blogs, as Stud only handles the top 100. Personally I think 100 is fine.

Fifth make sure you own ideas in the industry. You may need to sell ideas just before the drop so that the new ideas are landing on existing ideas. This drops the industry faster.

That’s pretty much it! In what, 20 minutes tops you’ve made the industry unworkable, now for the next week just repeat 4 and 5.

So, until these people learn some manners, apologise and learn that they cannot manipulate players into playing the game in any way other than the player’s own wishes, it’ll continue.

This is a GAME with 2 sides. Eventually you reap what you sow. Time people realise this is not their game. We all want to play, we all want to get along. We all have friends here. I am not falling out with anyone either, I’ll still help out with votes etc. but I will not accept condescension directed at me from people with a God complex. It’s why I’m not a UT. It’s why I’ll always be a Renegade even if not in the corp. My current corp know I’m like this. I don’t play dirty usually. I play my own game.

This is not corp wars V2 this is outside of any corporation dealings to either sides corps, I’m not attacking shares, only ideas.

Is this asshattery? Probably. My asshattery however is a temporary condition. I apologise for anyone taking collateral here. If you want to know what industries I’m hitting during this time look in my “Strategic” list (the underlined ones).

Linkscraper

Everyone’s favourite B$ IRC bot Stud has had an addition recently. Say you wanted to grab the top 100 links in an industry to link from your own blog, for idea production purposes. Well instead of going through the monotonous right-click/copy link location/browse to blog/paste/format link – crap Stud will do it for you.

In IRC type !links industry# and he’ll produce a nice list for you, write it to a .txt file (with .html formatting so you can host the page individually if you want, just change the extension) and send the file to you.

Here’s a demonstration ….
…the file he sent contained the following text…

Now, I could either copy the bit’s it tells me about and make a list (see my “Strategic” category over there <—-) or I could change the extension from .txt to .html and host the page

Now, how cool is that?

Chipmarket thing

The chipmarket thing in stud is offline at the moment while I work out some security issues with game admin. I meant to post this earlier but forgot. I’m thinking he’ll probably have some sort of cached information regarding a users premium status before sending premium only info to the channel. Anyhow, this is for me to work out(feel free to chip in!)

Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks.

Stud Updates

Our cuddly studdily has had a couple of small additions recently.

He can now recognise people based on their gender, as long as an admin or the nick themselves has added the nick to the appropriate list (use !boy if you are a boy and !girl if you are a girl). His !pamper and !hug commands reflect this addition.

I’ve also added a !chipmarket command. To use this you type !chipmarket YOURUSERID. (after the first use you don’t need to add your user ID as you are verified)

It returns the current chipmarket information.

example of !chipmarket command
Simple eh

….oh he’s now sporting blogshares-esque colours.

Stud

Stud’s in #blogshares now too. Go get him! lol

Oops! Mr Pilot decided to remove stud from #blogshares

[12:00AM] * You were kicked from #blogshares by MrPilot (No Bots In Channel Without Permission)
[12:00AM] #blogshares unable to join channel (address is banned)

So rather than gain permission for the bot to be there, which in turn would require permission for every little tweak and addition they can just do without! lol

Blogshares API

The other day while asking Island Dave to pass a script(the !comp command in stud) for me in IRC he mentioned AdamF might be able to sort me out with an API, a kind of back entry to the database info(at the moment scripts need to virtually load the pages much as you would in a browser, causing many database calls when perhaps you’re only filtering out one or two key pieces of information).

Well, wouldn’t you know it, AdamF posted in the forums about an even better idea than that. A game-side API, costing coders chips/B$ to access, allowing them to in turn charge B$/chips for usage of their scripts.

That should present loads of cool apps which can be run in the browser/IRC/stand alone apps. With all sorts of cool info manipulation you can count me signed up already.

Now, I just need to work out how to charge IRC users for bot usage…

…oh and come up with an idea they’ll actually want to use!

Voting

With the current spate of strategic voting BSEC cases (1 2 3) I thought I might make mention of voting, the process, for those worried about and new to, voting.

VOTE DEMOGRAPHICS ONLY!

That can’t be stressed enough. You can very quickly build up your 750 karma and attain moderator status voting only demographics. The reason for doing so is that demographic votes unlike category votes do not need any number of content posts to be present in the blog. Providing the blog has at least 1 post in the past 6 months(for voting, 3 months for adding) a demographic vote is legitimate. Content votes however require at least 5 posts which fit the industry in the last 6 months. This is where some people fall down, for example this will be blog post number three for this very blog, however already it’s in the Internet Games, Internet Community and BlogShares industries, all technically wrong votes although I’m not going to chase these up because the blog will soon enough be a legitimate member of these industries so the skewing is only very temporary.

Now… even if you do vote content, you must make sure the category you are voting for actually fits the blog. The current cases all focus on Inner Cities votes. If we go to the Inner Cities Industry page we see that it’s a sub-industry of City Life. The city life votes are valid as the blogs discuss life in the city. The Inner Cities votes are not valid though. Inner Cities doesn’t mean life in a City-Centre location, but instead specifically impoverished areas. This is where it would be easy for a new voter to fall down for the following reason.

Currently in the voting window you don’t see any mention of what the industry category description(and therefore a blogs validity as a member of the industry) pertains to specifically. Hopefully AdamF will implement my suggestion and make things a little easier for us but until that happens that’s my suggestion for new voters.

Now the current voting cases aren’t for new voters making the odd mistake, rather seasoned players making wrong votes on purpose to crash an industry, however the industries used are a very good example of how easy it is to misunderstand an industry category. So for that reason, until you are confident with content votes please stick to demographics.

We’re all about easy!

Stud

I’m making a boy-bot called “stud” at the moment. He’s in IRC right now in #billythekids-hideout and can be in other channels on request. It’s the girl’s answer to Jade, Katie and Mia.

Suggestions for responses and/or usefulness are welcome.

Here are the available studbot Commands ( items in {} are optional )

!help or !stud – shows the help file of commands
!hug {nick} – hugs the nick until they disappear
!strip {nick} – does a striptease for the nick
!comp #user – shows the current composite rank for the user id
!profit #industry percentage% – works out how much each bond in “#indutry id” should be priced at to achieve “percentage%” amount of profit
!pamper {nick} – does some random pampering to nick
!dbf – shows the date of 6months ago for blog delists
!lbf – shows the date of 3 months ago for new blog additions

All New Blogshares Blog

It was about time I got my own dedicated B$ blog and how better to kick it off than with a contest entry.

First the formalities…

Now the fun bit…

Santa’s come to Blogshares
Bringing with him lots of toys
Members get to play with them
They’re for all the girls and boys.

It starts with turbo chances
Play ten or twenty-five
A few billion to the chip market
Will keep those games alive

Then there’s the players market
Sell ideas for big bucks
Just don’t price them too highly
As they won’t sell and that sucks

The present of the arte tool
Is brilliant if your looking
To bag yourself an arte
While Christmas lunch is cooking

He’s also brought a new DB Box
It’s unwrapped, plugged-in and shiny
We had a couple of days of trouble but
The negative effect was tiny.

Who can forget the BSEC
GIC and Wackos
?
They’ll be here over Xmas
No doubt pulling crackers.

As you carve that Christmas turkey
And tuck in to your Yule logs
Remember those addicted ones
Who’ll be here, HTOing blogs.

Yes Santa’s good to players
Bringing all this Christmas cheer
He’s setting things up nicely
For a great new Blogshares year

Now Santa’s not the only one
To bring you Christmas presents
There’s 20 sigma for the one
Who gives this blog a Blogshares Presence

There’s more than just that sigma
For once in the index list
The alt-url can be added
This to you is my Xmas gift
